Facts about speakdrills

speakdrills is a website for practising spoken English. Students say things out loud, compare and rate themselves, drill by drill.

Who it is for

Adults who learn English, mostly between B1 and B2 and aiming at C1.

Levels go from A1 to C2 (the CEFR).

The drills

Pronunciation: words and short phrases, with audio and IPA.

Translation: a sentence in Spanish or Chinese, said in English.

Combine: two or three short sentences, said as one.

Shadowing: speaking along with a natural English sentence.

Conversation: a short spoken role-play with an AI character, with a goal. Students can describe their own situation.

How a session works

A first round: one item in each drill, with numbered steps.

Two ways to practise: Guided (the app picks the next drill) or on your own.

An AI checks spoken and typed answers in Translation and Combine and suggests a rating; the student decides.

The microphone turns speech into text. Recordings are not stored.

The level test

About 15 minutes, by voice, with an AI examiner.

The result is a level from A1 to C1 or above, with a report. It is an AI's suggestion and judges the words, not the voice.

Price

Free to use, with daily limits (for example 2 AI conversations a day).

A paid plan, Plus, at €5 a month, is coming.

Languages

The app is in English.

Translations of words and sentences: Spanish and Chinese (Simplified). Other languages: coming.
